Week 4

FANTASY FOOTBALL WAIVER WIRE (ADD/DROP) – WEEK 4

QUARTERBACKS

ADD – JARED GOFF L.A. RAMS

Leading up to the season there were so many takes on Jared Goff being one of the worst quarterbacks in the history of football. Many were calling him a draft bust after playing just 1 NFL season but what many failed to realize was the situation he had to endure under head coach Jeff Fisher. The 2016 Rams had no viable receiving threat as Kenny Britt was the best receiver on the team. They had Todd Gurley but he was playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in football who couldn’t open any holes or protect Goff in the pocket. The scheme/play-calling was elementary, basic, juvenile, unsophisticated, embarrassing and rudimentary as it didn’t create any complexity that defenses had to gameplan against. The organization realized what everyone else should’ve noticed and brought in the young offensive mastermind Sean McVay. After overhauling the roster by bringing in veteran Andrew Whitworth to stabilize the offensive line, drafting pass catchers Gerald Everett and Cooper Kupp, and then trading for the cherry on top Sammy Watkins, the Rams offense is night and day from the 2016 season. I expected growth with McVay scheming up talented players to capitalize but what I didn’t expect was the Rams to have the number 1 scoring offense after three weeks of football. Goff is averaging 272 yards passing per game, completing 70% of his passes and has 5 touchdowns to just 1 interception. I think it’s safe to say the bust predictions were a bit premature. Goff is a good add to your roster. I wouldn’t count on QB1 numbers every week but he can be a bye week replacement or a matchup based starter.

RUNNING BACKS

ADD – JOE MIXON CINCINNATI BENGALS

If you listened to our Podcast last week on iTunes (search “CPGM Podcast”) in our “Get Slapped” segment, I slapped Marvin Lewis for benching John Ross and not getting Joe Mixon more touches. You drafted these dynamic players for a reason and you have them on the sidelines for an offense who didn’t score a touchdown in the first 2 weeks of the season. I guess after firing offensive coordinator Ken Zampese after Week 2, the Bengals finally decided to give Mixon more playing time under new coordinator Bill Lazor. Mixon received 21 touches in Week 3 and out snapped and out touched Jeremy Hill and Gio Bernard combined. The rookie didn’t break any long runs against the Packers but if they continue to feed him then he will be the next rookie back the league will be talking about ala Kareem Hunt, Tarik Cohen and Dalvin Cook. Mixon has RB2 upside if he gets over 15 touches a game.

WIDE RECEIVERS

ADD – MARQISE LEE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Here is a guy I’ve been telling you to add since Allen Robinson went down in Week 1. I became a Marqise Lee believer last season after he had a mini breakout campaign as the 3rd receiver for the Jaguars. With the injury to Robinson and him surpassing Allen Hurns as the main guy in the passing offense, Lee is entrenched as the “go-to” option for Blake Bortles. You need to scoop him up before it’s too late and he breaks out in a major way. The Jaguars have been pounding the rock with Fournette on offense while the defense locks up opposing teams. This formula is their best formula to winning football games which depresses the receivers a bit but once the Jaguars start playing from behind like they customarily do, it will be the Lee show. Lee is the top receiver add this week.

TIGHT ENDS

ADD – JARED COOK OAKLAND RAIDERS

I’ve been the biggest Jared Cook detractor in his under-achieving career as he has been one of the biggest teases with an exceptional size/speed combination without any substance. Playing with Aaron Rodgers last season didn’t improve his productivity so why should Derek Carr suddenly make him a fantasy contributor? I will tell you how, the tight end position is in total disarray and Cook at least gets a fair amount of targets in the passing game. After being in desperation last week, I scooped up Hunter Henry to get a fat goose egg. I guess Cook’s 4 catches for 40 yards makes him a serviceable tight end to scoop up on your team.
